On March 7 in the Auditorium of Antigua held the institutional act of Women’s Day with the IV Edition of Women Who Count. <\/strong>The Cabildo of Fuerteventura and the six municipalities of the Island delivered this Thursday the Awards ‘Island of Fuerteventura: Women who count’,<\/strong>recognizing the trajectory of seven women on the occasion of International Women’s Day, which is celebrated on March 8. At 7 o’clock we were given the awards <\/strong>after which later, with all the emotion, we tried to give a small speech.
\nFor me it was an honor<\/strong> to have been awarded along with these 6 pieces of women who have given everything for the island of Fuerteventura. Sometimes it seems that, as an athlete,<\/strong>all the effort that is made is invisible and that they recognize it with acts like this means a lot to me.<\/p>\n

Below I introduce my colleagues and 6 award-winning women:<\/p>\n

Juana Mar\u00eda Montelongo,<\/strong>who received recognition on behalf of the municipality of La \"\" Oliva, was born in Tindaya in 1951. At the age of seven he began to make basketry and other household utensils with palm leaves. Before turning ten years old, he was already making traditional majorero draft, later moving to clay utensils and becoming a benchmark for craftsmanship at the regional level. In 1993 she was awarded the Insular Handicraft Award, awarded at the Antigua Handicraft Fair. His extensive career continues with the organization of training courses and workshops in which he transmits his teachings.<\/p>\n

Flora Hierro,<\/strong>honored on behalf of the municipality of P\u00e1jara, was born in Morro Jable in 1937, in the bosom of a working family. At the age of fourteen he began to work in the tomato harvest of Gran Tarajal and in La Aldea de San Nicol\u00e1s, later raising his six children. Today he participates in dances, meetings and trips of the Morro Jable Senior Center.<\/p>\n

On behalf of the municipality of Betancuria, this year Mar\u00eda del Buen Viaje Moseguez,<\/strong>born in Tef\u00eda, was honored. In Aguas Verdes she met her husband, whom she married in 1967 and had five children. Mar\u00eda Moseguez is considered a tireless worker inside and outside the home, collaborating with the community of neighbors and currently participating in the activities of the Betancuria Senior Center. During her life she has considered herself an active and hardworking woman inside and outside the home, taking care of her mother and raising her children.<\/p>\n

Petr\u00edn Quintero,<\/strong>who received the award on behalf of the municipality of Antigua, grew up in Caleta de Fuste, where he fishes with his boat, the Mar\u00eda de las Nieves. She is also the caretaker of the image of Our Lady La Pe\u00f1a del Mar, captaining her maritime procession every year. Quintero says that, with the arrival of the boats to El Castillo, the meals also reached the fishermen, turning ‘La Casa de Frasquita’ into a famous restaurant.<\/p>\n

Mar\u00eda del Carmen Aguiar,<\/strong>honored on behalf of the municipality of Tuineje, was born in Tiscamanita in 1946. At the age of fourteen he \"\" joined the labor mute in the packaging of the tomato. Since his youth he is involved with his environment, collaborating in the organization of the Fiestas de San Marcos. After getting married and moving to the town of Tuineje, he became involved with his neighborhood association Virgen de la Salud, forming part of its board of directors since 1978, through which he developed an active work demanding neighborhood improvements. In 1985 she resumed her work activity and began in 1995 in the hotel industry as a maid, rising to governess. During this stage she stands out in the trade union movement as a representative of the workers of the sector.<\/p>\n

My family accompanied me in the collection of the award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

On behalf of the municipality of Puerto del Rosario, the trajectory of Margarita Gonz\u00e1lez,<\/strong>born in Antigua in 1952, was recognized. Teacher of early childhood and primary education, she began her liberating moment from a very early age. During his formative stage, he became involved as a social activist in 1975. He practiced his profession at the Pablo Neruda School, in Puerto del Rosario, from its inauguration in 1985, until his retirement. Committed to different causes, Margarita is involved in all fronts in which the care of the earth, justice and equality is defended, participating in different groups of different motivations such as ecologists, solidarity, antimilitarist and feminist movements, among others.<\/p>\n

From here I wanted to thank the Cabildo de Fuerteventura and the City Council of P\u00e1jara for this recognition and for their support in my sports career and in being able to continue carrying the name of the island of Fuerteventura around the world. Thank you.<\/p>\n
