Fuerteventura+Julia=Fuertejulia. It actually all started when I was looking for my Instagram nickname. It may seem unimportant, but I was convinced I wanted something that really defined me, and my first and last name just wasn’t it.
I love the fact that I was born on an island in the middle of the Atlantic, just 100 km from Africa.
On the other hand, using the name of the island where I was born was, and still is, a way of reminding myself where I come from and staying humble <\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Eventually it turned out that the word “strong” not only meant where I came from but also defined the way I am, act and think. And last but not least, I didn’t want to put the typical www.juliacastrokiteboarding.com because I didn’t want to be seen as a person who only knows how to do one thing, nor do I want to be seen as a person who only knows how to do one thing. Julia Castro | Waterwoman and sports communication expert

Julia Castro (known as fuertejulia on Instagram<\/i>) is a professional Spanish waterwoman from Fuerteventura, with a unique career that combines elite competition in wind and board sports (kitesurfing, wakeboarding, wingfoiling, foiling) with a top-level career in international sports communication.<\/strong>
<\/span><\/div>

By the age of eight, Julia Castro had already earned her first diving star, thanks to her parents, both professional divers. By then, sport was a natural part of her life: karate, horse riding, sailing, handball, kayaking, always on the move. Hyperactive and full of energy, she soon discovered that the only way to channel that inner whirlwind was through sport. <\/span><\/p>

From athletics hurdles to kiting: an unexpected turn.<\/b><\/p><\/div>

In 2011 she began to stand out in athletics, especially in hurdles and heptathlon. At a single Canary Islands Championship she took four gold medals (100 m and 300 m hurdles, javelin and another event she can’t remember) and became the most decorated athlete of the season. Her future seemed set… until a minor knee injury and an operation changed everything.<\/p>

Far from giving up, Julia found a new passion almost by chance. After working as a waitress at the Windsurf and Kitesurf World Championship in Fuerteventura, “La Carpa”,<\/b> she rode on the back of one of the competitors as a \u00abbackpack\u00bb: that moment changed everything. A year later she accepted a swap: kite lessons in exchange for taking photos of the instructor (back then Julia dreamed of becoming a photographer one day). That summer marked another before and after; from then on she spent every day at the beach, covering 60 km to train without a driving licence (by bus, hitchhiking or carrying her gear from school).<\/span><\/p>

At first she trained with borrowed gear. Little by little, with all kinds of jobs and thanks to photography prizes (her other great passion), she managed to buy her first board (a North Soleil<\/span><\/i> 2011). A year later, in <\/span>2012<\/b>, she dared to compete at the Spanish Championship in Lanzarote, where she surprised everyone with a 3rd place in freestyle and waves<\/span>, and shortly afterwards she finished third at the <\/span>Tarifa Masters of Kite<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>
